Uplifting interior design to raise the spirits
Here’s some Friday inspiration - our spirits have been lifted recently by bright, colourful, dramatic, and downright maximalist interiors during the prolonged winter lock-down… staring at the same four walls seems to be easier when they are technicolour! Here are a few of our favourite hotels with uplifting interiors, from the softly subtle, to full-power. We can’t wait to visit when travel begins again. In the meantime… we’ll take the wallpaper, the carpet, the linen, those armchairs…
Menorca Experimental, Canary Islands, Spain
Designed by Dorothée Meilichzon to reflect “the spirit of an artist’s vacation cottage”, Menorca Experimental is an inspiring place with understated design that packs a punch. We love the bright bedrooms, where the bold, colourful headboards and Miro-esque bed linen take centre stage against a perfectly blank canvas of white walls and parquet wood flooring.
The Dairy Private Hotel by Naumi, Queenstown, New Zealand
One of three new hotels opened by Naumi Hotels in the last few months, The Dairy Private Hotel by Naumi in Queenstown New Zealand is a maximalist’s delight. Each guest room has a beautiful House of Hackney wallpaper on the ceiling - in fact the hotel is a love letter to intricate wallpaper, along with romantic florals, and bold colourful carpet. Think cottagecore with a punk edge. Interiors by Auckland firm, Material Creative.
Hotel Les Deux Gares, Paris, France
Described by The Modern House as a “poster boy for the new maximalists”, Luke Edward Hall demonstrates a masterstroke in feel-good maximalism with his Parisian hotel, Hotel Les Deux Gares. A charming mix of colour and print, the hotel showcases candystripe headboards, tortoise-shell effect ceilings, chevron flooring, chintzy wallpaper, leopard-print sofas - to name just a few elements. The gym is worth checking out in itself!
El Fenn, Marrakech, Morocco
Immersed in vibrant colour and inspired by Morocco’s artisanal heritage, craftsmanship, art and culture, El Fenn really is a hub for creativity in Marrakech. We love the hotel’s clever combination of jewel coloured tadelakt walls, graphic textile prints, restored Moroccan architecture and elegant mid century elements. The good news - El Fenn has a wonderful shop celebrating modern Moroccan design, where you’ll find rugs, cushions, throws and ceramics as well as books on design and style.
